Kerala packs mountains, forests, lakes and plantations into a small state, so a camping weekend can feel completely different from one district to the next. Here are ten places our trekkers love, with a quick reality check on each.

One rule first: camping inside forests is allowed only through the Forest Department, KFDC or licensed operators. Every place below has legal camps you can book.

1. Munnar (Idukki)

The classic. Tent stays on tea-estate ridges and near the Meesapulimala base camp, with nights cold enough for a bonfire from November to February. Pair it with the Meesapulimala trek for the full experience.

2. Vagamon (Idukki–Kottayam)

Rolling meadows, pine forest and cliff viewpoints about 2.5 hours from Kochi. Lots of hilltop camps with adventure add-ons like paragliding in season. Good for families and first-timers.

3. Wayanad

Cooler air, coffee estates and forest edges. Camps around Meppadi and Vythiri are a short drive from the Chembra and Banasura treks. Great base if you are coming from Kozhikode or Bengaluru.

4. Gavi (Pathanamthitta)

A KFDC eco-tourism zone deep inside the forest, with a reservoir, cardamom hills and real wildlife sightings. Capacity is limited and it is one of the most rewarding forest stays in Kerala. Book well ahead.

5. Thekkady (Idukki)

Next to the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Camping here usually comes with Forest Department programmes like jungle walks and bamboo rafting, run with trained local guides.

6. Kolukkumalai (Munnar–Tamil Nadu border)

Home to one of the world's highest tea factories and a sunrise view that rivals Meesapulimala. Camps here are simple; the 4x4 jeep ride up is half the adventure.

7. Ponmudi (Thiruvananthapuram)

Hairpin bends, cool winds and grassy tops, about 60 km from the capital. Easy to combine with an Agasthyarkoodam trip in January.

8. Nelliyampathy (Palakkad)

Orange farms, cardamom and tea plantations with valley views. Quieter than Munnar and good for a slow weekend.

9. Ranipuram (Kasaragod)

Called the "Ooty of Kerala" by locals. Short grassland trek to the top and Forest Department-run stays nearby. The best option in north Kerala.

10. Athirappilly–Vazhachal (Thrissur)

Riverside camps near Kerala's biggest waterfall, about 1.5 hours from Kochi. Ideal for a quick overnight with a forest walk in the morning.
